Amos5:7. Similar to Amos 6:12, this verse connects justice and righteousness. The fruit of righteousness is justice.Justice is fair treatment, not only in the courts but in every aspect of life. This strikes at the root of a major portion of God's judgment of Israel (Isaiah 59:13-15).Here, righteousness is pictured as a standard, flag, or banner thrown to the ground. 7 You who hturn justice to wormwood, And lay righteousness to rest in the earth!” 8 He made the iPleiades and Orion; He turns the shadow of death into morning jAnd makes the day dark as night; He kcalls for the waters of the sea And pours them out on the face of the earth; lThe Lord is His name. 9 He 1rains ruin upon the strong, So that fury comes upon the fortress. 10 mThey hate the one who rebukes in the gate, And they nabhor the one who speaks uprightly. 11 oTherefore, because you 2tread down the poor And take grain 3taxes from him, Though pyou have built houses of hewn stone, Yet you shall not dwell in them; You have planted 4pleasant vineyards, But you shall not drink wine from them. 12 For I qknow your manifold transgressions And your mighty sins rAfflicting the just and taking bribes; sDiverting the poor from justice at the gate. 13 Therefore tthe prudent keep silent at that time, For it is an evil time.

Amos5: 7-13 IN the previous sermon on verses 4-6 we heard how God, through Amos, urges Israel to avail themselves of the only hope there is for sinful mankind. Confession (inspired by Amos 7: 7-17) You stand beside a wall. with a plumb line in your hand, Lord—. the wall that I have built. What once was a straight, strong wall of protection, a sanctuary against all that might harm me, is now revealed as a bowed, bulging, weak wall of separation. For the people of Gilgal will be dragged off into exile, and the people of Bethel will be reduced to nothing.” 6 Come back to the LORD and live! Otherwise, he will roar through Israel like a fire, devouring you completely. Your gods in Bethel won’t be able to quench the flames. 7 You twist justice, making it a bitter pill for the oppressed. You treat the righteous like dirt. 8 It is the LORD who created the stars, the Pleiades and Orion. He turns darkness into morning and day into night. He draws up water from the oceans and pours it down as rain on the land. The LORD is his name! 9 With blinding speed and power he destroys the strong, crushing all their defenses. 10 How you hate honest judges! How you despise people who tell the truth! 11 You trample the poor, stealing their grain through taxes and unfair rent. Therefore, though you build beautiful stone houses, you will never live in them. Though you plant lush vineyards, you will never drink wine from them. 12 For I know the vast number of your sins and the depth of your rebellions. You oppress good people by taking bribes and deprive the poor of justice in the courts. 13 So those who are smart keep their mouths shut, for it is an evil time. 14 Do what is good and run from evil so that you may live! Then the LORD God of Heaven’s Armies will be your helper, just as you have claimed. 15 Hate evil and love what is good; turn your courts into true halls of justice. Perhaps even yet the LORD God of Heaven’s Armies will have mercy on the remnant of his people.
